League-High 67 Buckeyes Named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars
COLUMBUS, Ohio - For the second-consecutive year, Ohio State led the way with 67 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award recipients, the conference announced Thursday. The award is given to student-athletes who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 or above for the previous academic year. Recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second year at their institution.
The rowing team ranked first with nine honorees for the second-consecutive year, followed by the women's swimming and diving team with seven and the women's soccer team with five. The women's cross country, field hockey and men's swimming and diving teams each had four recipients. In all, 14 women's teams and 10 men's teams had student-athletes recognized.
Six Buckeyes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs - Carolin Helmholz (rowing), Christina Keesey (women's tennis), Lauren Kohls (women's cross country), Lindsay Quintiliani (field hockey), Maxwell Stearns (men's fencing) and Caitlin Vassoler (women's fencing).
Ohio State also led the conference in academic All-Big Ten selections, with 347 honorees, breaking its own mark of 306 set last season and marking the seventh-consecutive year the Buckeyes ranked first.

Loyola men's basketball student-athletes saluted for academic excellence

CHICAGO (July 20, 2010) - Three members of the 2009-10 Loyola University
Chicago men's basketball team were recently named to the National
Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for excellence in
their academic pursuits. Redshirt senior Andy Polka (Oshkosh,
Wis./Oshkosh West) was joined on the Honors Court by senior Ryan
Sterling (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral) and recently graduated Aric Van
Weelden (Munster, Ind./Munster).

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a
high standard of academic criteria. A student-athlete must be a junior
or senior academically; hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or
higher at the end of the 2009-10 school year; have spent at least one
year at their current academic institution; and be a member of a NCAA
Division I, II, III or NAIA institution.

Van Weelden, who graduated in May with a degree in finance, averaged 3.4
points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in an injury-riddled 2009-10
campaign. Sterling, a finance and sports management major, contributed
1.5 ppg and 0.5 rpg off the bench last season while Polka, who is
studying finance and operations management, tied for the Horizon League
lead with 8.9 rpg, while also chipping in 7.3 ppg and 3.0 apg.

Loyola won 14 games in 2009-10 and returns all five of its starters for
the 2010-11 season.
