Loyola men's basketball student-athletes saluted for academic excellence
CHICAGO (July 20, 2010) - Three members of the 2009-10 Loyola University Chicago men's basketball team were recently named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for excellence in their academic pursuits. Redshirt senior Andy Polka (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) was joined on the Honors Court by senior Ryan Sterling (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral) and recently graduated Aric Van Weelden (Munster, Ind./Munster).
In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. A student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically; hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher at the end of the 2009-10 school year; have spent at least one year at their current academic institution; and be a member of a NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA institution.
Van Weelden, who graduated in May with a degree in finance, averaged 3.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in an injury-riddled 2009-10 campaign. Sterling, a finance and sports management major, contributed 1.5 ppg and 0.5 rpg off the bench last season while Polka, who is studying finance and operations management, tied for the Horizon League lead with 8.9 rpg, while also chipping in 7.3 ppg and 3.0 apg.
Loyola won 14 games in 2009-10 and returns all five of its starters for the 2010-11 season.
